Captain's Drive-In

What wonderful weather and a great turn out of members for the Captain's Drive-in on Sunday 24th September. More than 100 members watched Brian Seymour-Vallance stroll onto the tee in plus fours, pipe and tweeds with his caddie Graham Taylor (showing suitable deference) and leaderboard carrier, Ken Coulman (both similarly dressed) showing Brian at 5 under heading our own Professional Simon by two shots.

Brian reflected with his caddie over choice of clubs deciding to put the plastic driver away in favour of a bendy iron and then finally settling on his trusty driver before smashing it down the fairway with sone considerable relief.

All then retired to the clubhouse for a lovely meal and wine on the table courtsey of our new Captain.

Congratulations Brian and we look forward to an enjoyable year.

First Win for Marcus - report below:

Marcus Sewell took a massive step into his professional golfing life when he held his nerve to win his first pro event by 2 shots from Paul Kinnear at Hamptworth Golf Club yesterday.
A very benign day greeted the players on the first day and it was anticipated that the scoring would be pretty low, however the fast running greens and some tricky pins kept the scoring at a modest level.
Sewell and Kinnear led after the first round with solid 5 under par 66’s with Liam Robinson tucked in one shot behind, on 4 under.
Wiltshire’s own Matt Mumford, Sean Towndrow, Sam Boyes and the promising young amateur Peter Baeg were all grouped together on 3 under par with a good chance of being in the mix at the end.
Sewell made a blistering start covering the front nine holes in 5 under par to stretch out a 2-shot lead over Kinnear, but he had been in this position before and knew that there were still hurdles to overcome. Winning is never easy.
It was Mumford and Towndrow, in the penultimate group who each posted 7 under par totals to establish the clubhouse lead but with Sewell and Kinnear battling it out over the closing holes it would not be a wining total.
As the final group headed to the eighteenth and final hole, Sewell held a slender one-shot lead over Kinnear who had just birdied the seventeenth to Sewell’s bogey and so all the pressure was on the shoulders of young Sewell.
Kinnear had the opportunity to test Sewell with a birdie chance on the last but his effort just slid past, leaving Sewell with 2 putts for the win but he only needed the one and that sealed a 2-shot victory and a well-deserved cheque for £3,000, but the biggest reward for Sewell was being able to finish the job, and win.
Sewell will now hopefully use his victory as a launch pad to join other Jamega first timers, like Andrew Johnston and Tyrrell Hatton on the European Tour.

Junior Match v Chelsfield Lakes

On Sunday 17th September we played a Junior friendly match v Chelsfield Lakes.

Sadly West Kent lost 6 -1 but having given shots in 6 out of 7 matches and only losing by 1 shot in most of them  very well done to all the Juniors that took part.
